J.K. Rowling’s comments about transgender issues in 2020 caused a major controversy, leading to widespread backlash from fans and celebrities.
The debate over her views affects her reputation and relationships within the entertainment industry.
In early June 2020, J.K. Rowling, the famous author of the Harry Potter series, faced criticism for a series of tweets she posted about the transgender community.
On June 6, 2020, she retweeted an article discussing “people who menstruate,” expressing her discomfort with the terminology used.
She sarcastically tweeted, “‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

The backlash to her initial tweet was significant, but Rowling didn’t back down. She expanded on her views, tweeting, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”
Rowling added, “I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. I’d march with you if you were discriminated against on the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life has been shaped by being female. I do not believe it’s hateful to say so.”
On June 10, 2020, she published a lengthy essay on her website titled “TERF Wars,” explaining her position further. TERF stands for trans-exclusionary radical feminist.
Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter, was among the first stars to respond.
Through The Trevor Project, he stated, “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional healthcare associations.”
Radcliffe expressed regret for any pain caused to fans, emphasizing the importance of supporting transgender people.
Emma Watson, known for her role as Hermione Granger, tweeted her support for the transgender community, stating, “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”
She also shared her donations to trans-supportive organizations.
Rupert Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers. Trans women are women. Trans men are men.”
Eddie Redmayne, star of Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts series, also voiced his disagreement with Rowling, affirming the validity of transgender identities and calling for peaceful coexistence.
Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley, and other stars like Eddie Izzard and Stephen King also publicly disagreed with Rowling’s statements.
Despite the backlash, Rowling has continued to defend her views. In a follow-up social media rant on July 5, 2020, she responded to criticism about her stance on hormone therapy for young trans people.
She expressed concerns about young people being pushed towards medicalization that might not be in their best interests.
In September 2020, her book Troubled Blood sparked further outrage.
The novel features a cis male serial killer who dresses as a woman to prey on cis women, leading to accusations that the book promoted harmful stereotypes about transgender people.
While most celebrities’ reactions were critical of Rowling, some defended her.
Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, defended Rowling, saying, “I don’t think what she said was offensive, really. There’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended.”
Comedian Eddie Izzard, who is gender-fluid, stated, “I don’t think J.K. Rowling is transphobic. I think we need to look at the things she has written about in her blog.”
Rowling has also reported receiving death threats from trans activists, showing the intense emotions and divisions the controversy has sparked.
The controversy extended to Rowling’s future projects, including a planned Harry Potter TV series.
Some fans expressed discomfort with supporting new works that would benefit Rowling financially.
The video game Hogwarts Legacy also faced criticism despite including a seemingly trans character, Sirona Ryan.
J.K. Rowling’s comments about transgender issues have caused a lot of debate and strong reactions online.
Her initial remarks upset many fans and celebrities, leading to public disagreements and statements from well-known actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.
They, along with other stars and fans, have voiced their support for the transgender community, often contradicting Rowling’s views.
The controversy has also influenced media projects, interviews, and public opinions. Some defend Rowling, while others criticize her, showing a clear divide in how people view her statements.
Overall, this situation highlights the ongoing challenges and sensitivities surrounding discussions about gender identity and rights.
