Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a film that has become a feminist phenomenon, dominated the 2024 Golden Globe Awards nominations with an impressive 10 nods. This achievement ties it with “Cabaret” as the second most-nominated film in the 81-year history of the awards.
Close behind is “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb development, scoring eight nominations.
In the television categories, HBO’s “Succession” garnered significant attention, leading with nine nominations for its final season.
FX’s “The Bear” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” followed, each receiving five nods. The best TV drama and comedy categories are filled with diverse and compelling shows, making the competition tight.
Netflix leads the pack among media companies with 28 nominations, thanks to productions like “Maestro,” “The Crown,” and “The Diplomat.”
Warner Bros. Discovery is close behind with 27 nominations, including for “Barbie,” “Succession,” and “Barry.”
Despite critical acclaim, films like Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” and Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” were surprisingly left out.
“The Color Purple” missed a best musical or comedy nomination, and the reboot of “Frasier” also went unrecognized.
This year’s Golden Globes introduced significant changes, with each category featuring 6 nominees instead of 5.
New prizes celebrate box office achievements and stand-up comedy performances, acknowledging films like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and comedians like Trevor Noah and Ricky Gervais.
It’s important to note that the Golden Globes, voted on by around 300 journalists, don’t always align with the choices of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which consists of 10,500 film industry professionals.
The Golden Globe Awards ceremony is set for January 7 and will be broadcast live on CBS, streaming also on Paramount+ and the CBS app. After decades on NBC, this marks a significant network change. The host for the 2024 broadcast has not yet been announced.
